Splinter Cell Conviction in Your Pocket [Gdc]

Gameloft's upcoming release of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Conviction looks to bring over the feel and style of the Splinter Cell reboot to the iPhone in a four to five hour experience. And in many ways, it seems to succeed.

My time spent playing the game on the iPhone yesterday gave me a chance to check out some of the things that have so far set Conviction apart from previous iterations of the series.

There were moments when my goal appeared as giant white text hovering over the scenery, though the effect wasn't nearly as powerful as what I've seen in the console version of the game.

The other gameplay...

Man dies after Midlothian cops use Taser on him

JaesunInglesText.jpgA Riverdale man died early this morning after being subdued by police with a Taser following a traffic stop, authorities said.

Officers used a Taser on Ingles in an attempt to subdue him, Midlothian police Lt. Harold Kaufman said.  He was taken to the hospital after he experienced trouble breathing, police said.

Midlothian police stopped Ingles' car driven about 11 p.m. Tuesday in the 14600 block of Pulaski Road in Midlothian for several traffic violations, police said in a release.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light Eyes-On: What's A Better Word For Reboot? [Gdc10]

Crystal Dynamics is going digital for Tomb Raider star Lara Croft's next adventure, an isometric, puzzle-focused and arcadey spin on the 15-year-old franchise. is Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light rebooting in the right direction?

Now, it may not be fair to label Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light a "reboot" as Crystal Dynamics is clearly making the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade release as a Tomb Raider game with clear boundaries between it and the "pillar" releases. Guardian of Light is set outside of the series chronology, an independent side story. It also plays differently from every other Tomb Raider game, a top-down, sometimes cooperative adventure that adds a second player, the Mayan warrior and spear expert Totec.

Video catches backdraft that injured 4 Chicago firefighters

Backdraft612.jpg
A neighbor's video catches a backdraft engulfing Chicago firefighters.

It was one of those small fires that firefighters face every day.

But even the smallest blaze can turn on you -- as shown on a newly surfaced video of a backdraft that injured four Chicago firefighters last month.

The video, shot by a neighbor through a window, will now be used to train recruits.

The video begins shortly after Truck 33 pulled up to the boarded-up coach house on South Paulina Street on Feb. 18. Dark gray smoke is drifting from the roof and the back but no flames can be seen.

Two firefighters begin prying off a large sheet of plywood -- one of them on a ladder, the other on a porch. Suddenly they disappear in a blast of hot smoke and ash. Both stagger to the ground. One of them crawls, tries to get up, t...

Quinn calls for 33-percent income tax hike for education

Gov. Pat Quinn today called for a 33 percent increase in the state income tax rate to raise money for education and ease deep cuts he's proposed in his new budget plan.

In his short budget speech to the House and Senate, Quinn argued that an income tax "surcharge" would be enough to restore Illinois' education budget to current levels and allow the state to get caught up on some of the millions owed to public schools, community colleges and four-year universities.

Quinn wants to increase the personal income tax rate from 3 percent to 4 percent --- a 33 percent increase --- with the corporate tax rate rising from 4.8 percent to 5.8 percent. The tax hike would bring in $2.8 billion a year.

"I believe this 1 percent for education makes sense, and I think the people of Illinois will understand. We must invest in the future, even in these tough economic times," Quinn said. This is urgent. We don't have six months. We don't have six weeks. I challenge the General Asse...

True Crime: The GDC 10 Preview

Activision shelved the True Crime series after only two games. Not that either were bad; they just never quite lived up to the potential of a cop's perspective on the fight against crime in a sprawling urban open world game. As part of this fresh start, True Crime moves halfway around the world to Hong Kong where investigator Wei Shin has been assigned to infiltrate a Triad gang. But to get the action movie feel developer United Front wanted, the game version of Hong Kong does not accurately map to the real world city. Instead, the four neighborhoods draw from a number of different sectors of Hong Kong.

In the demo I saw, Shen got an assignment from a minor boss named Winston to kidnap a rival boss and take out his heroin processing plant...
